Netflix releases Indrani Mukerjea show as CBI’s appeal gets rejected

On Thursday, Netflix streamed the docu-series ‘The Indrani Mukerjea Story: The Buried Truth’ after the Bombay High Court dismissed a CBI’s plea to stop it. The documentary explores the mystery behind the vanishing of Sheena Bora, the 25-year-old daughter of Indrani Mukerjea, who is accused of murdering her.

The docu-series was supposed to debut on Netflix on February 23, but the CBI approached the court, arguing that it could affect the trial. The High Court ordered the documentary makers to postpone the release until it decided. On Thursday, the court ruled in favor of the documentary and rejected the CBI’s request to halt it until the case ends.

Indrani Mukerjea, along with her former driver Shyamvar Rai and ex-husband Sanjeev Khanna, allegedly killed Bora in a car by choking her in April 2012. Bora was Mukerjea’s daughter from an earlier relationship. Her corpse was set on fire in a forest in Raigad district of Maharashtra.

The crime was exposed in 2015 when Rai confessed to it after being arrested in another case. Mukerjea was nabbed in August 2015 and got bail in May 2022. The other suspects in the case, Rai, Khanna and Peter Mukerjea, who is Indrani’s former spouse, are also out on bail.

The CBI said the documentary could shape public opinion and influence the judge. However, the court said it had seen the series and did not think the CBI had a valid reason to oppose it.
